We Dance In this Kitchen

Today was rough.  It was just one of those days where my mood could not rebound no matter what I tried.  Even taking spin class didn’t help this morning. And if you know me, this is not a good sign!  My spin studio is my sanctuary. That dark room, full of energy and music has changed me over the past 3 years.  That room has gotten me through some of the toughest times in my life. I learned to be stronger each day, mentally and physically, because I had a place I could look forward to going where for 45 minutes I got to clear my mind, be present with the music and completely be myself.  I divert for a second. My deep love for spin takes over at times, but I can dive deeper into that another time.

What I remembered today was this:  We Dance in this Kitchen.  I have a little wooden kitchen sign with this saying.  My husband, Dan, gave it to me as a Christmas present one year.  Honestly, it was a truly meaningful gift, even though it may not seem like much.  However, it’s what we DO in this family. We throw kitchen raves. I’m talking all out twerking (Dan’s specialty), booty popping, stanky leggin’, and moves you’ve never even heard of before happening right in our kitchen.  I’m not ashamed to say we even break out the glow sticks. We are creating memories, albeit ridiculous ones, that will last a lifetime.

So here’s the thing:  Dan’s been away for 4 weeks in Atlanta while the kids and I are in Pennsylvania.  It’s been tough being away from him, being a single mother, having to keep the house up to par as we are trying to sell, and the normal stressors of moving.  Through all this, I FORGOT to keep dancing in the kitchen! So, this afternoon while making dinner and prepping food for the week, I cranked up Alexa with my Spotify playlist and got down BY MYSELF.  And I loved every minute of it! The sun was shining through the windows, I got lost in the music and everything I was stressing about went away. Just like food, music evokes certain feelings and makes memories that leave an imprint on your mind forever.  I remember the songs being played at certain pivotal life moments or the ones sung to me as a child, cheek to cheek dancing with my father.

My advice to you (and myself):  NEVER STOP DANCING or FEELING THE BEAT OF THE MUSIC.  Whether it’s in your kitchen, in the shower, or in your bedroom closet:  Dance. Feel the Music. Let Go. It’s so good for your soul.
